Copernico and EFG Art Ltd present Directed Tensions, a site-specific project by Nei Albertí hosted by Copernico Centrale in Milan
The project Direct Tensions by Nei Albertí consists of a site-specific installation and cubes made with glass, methacrylate and Lycra, expressing the antimony between balance and randomness in an original interpretation of force lines to reveal a new perception of space structure. The Catalan artist is telling ARTEEZ about this new project, his work and inspirations as a sculptor and his upcoming projets.
You are presenting a new installation called Directed Tensions. Can you walk us through this installation and explain your artistic process? How did you get inspired by the place?
Nei Albertí (N.A.) : Normally, each space inspires me in different ways, but in this case, I decided not to be inspired by the space and fight against everything that I normally do.
I started in a totally chaotic way, without respecting anything. I didn’t take care of the shapes or the rhythm of the textile nor the dialog with the space, as I usually do.
Without looking at how it looks, I only let myself be guided by the speed, the nerve and the chaos in my own rhythm. I tried to be possessed by my body not my brain. By my touch, not my sight.
When I had all the space filled, I saw a lovely mess and tried to fix everything that was poorly done without break up the chaos and disorder.
You studied gemmology and, in 1998, you decided to become a sculptor. What attracted you to sculpture?
N.A. : Since I was a child, I had a great attraction for touching. Textures,volume and relief have always fascinated me.
Painting or drawing has something magical that is very attractive to a child, but the volume, the objects and the space are the basis of children’s games and I have always felt very comfortable playing with these elements.
You have learned different sculpting techniques and experimented various materials. Fabrics and yarns are your new supports. How/why did you choose these materials?
N.A. : I have worked with many materials throughout my career and they have always chosen me, or chance has brought us together. I am just a simple slave of materials and destiny! Hahahaha!
But there’s another truth : the fabric has rare properties within the idea of sculpture. It is fragile, it can be transparent, it weighs little and it is very fast to model. I like the idea of being almost outside the concept of sculpture but without leaving it entirely.
Speed is very important to me since I do not make sketches. My creation system is very direct and intuitive and the fabric allows me to create and change shapes and spaces very quickly.
In some ways, your work is reminiscent of Thomas Saraceno’s latest installations. Do you respond to or follow the works of any of your contemporaries?
N.A. : I am sure that many artists have influenced my art of course, although I think that the ideas interest me more than the formal aspects of many of them.
Like any artist, knowing the history of art is very important to develop our own work, trying to take one more step in the art world. However, I think that some philosophers, musicians, film directors or people around me have influenced me more than plastic artists to find or develop my path.
I mean, my work is about my life and my biggest changes have come from different places and situations and mostly not from the art world.
Do you have any upcoming projects you would like to share?
N.A. : Sure! I’m always thinking on the next project. There are many ideas that I would like to work with.
Our next project will be in Italy, again, within the Bologna Art Fair, at the end of January 2021. Also, the Bologna University has commissioned 3 site-specific installations.
In September 2021, in collaboration with Urvanity Lab, we will be presenting an installation in Madrid. The new year will be full of exciting and challenging projects.
